Kyle Hollingsworth Band - 10/19/2013: The Last Concert Cafe; Houston, TX

Kyle Hollingsworth, the keyboard player for the String Cheese Incident, was out on a short, three show run with his own band, the Kyle Hollingsworth Band.  Their stops were New Orleans at the Howlin’ Wolf, Houston at the Last Concert Café and the Art Outside festival in Rockdale, TX.  I caught the middle show in Houston.

The opening act, Earphunk from New Orleans, was a great start for the evening.  Their jammy-funky style got the masses moving.  When KHB band took the stage about 11:30pm, the venue was full and the crowd was primed.  They opened with an instrumental cover of the Beatles, Taxman, followed by Too Young.  Next up was Can’t Wait Another Day, which Kyle explained that he wrote while waiting for his daughter to be born.  This was followed by a new tune, tentatively named Lucky Charms.  Another new tune, You Got the World, then This Must Be the Place (Naïve Melody), the Talking Heads cover that regularly appears on String Cheese Incident setlists.  As the show progressed, more String Cheese Incident tunes appeared.  We were treated to The Way That It Goes, and a set closing Let’s Go Outside.  Piece of Mine was the first encore, where they brought out Paul Provosty of Earphunk.  Rosie ended the show, with Christian Gallé of Earphunk also joining in.

It was a great show, in a very cool venue.  Kyle said that he’s working on a solo disc, and some of the tunes he played are destined for that CD.  String Cheese Incident will be appearing at their own Hulaween celebration at Suwanee Park, FL from Oct 31 to Nov 2.
