After fulfilling their duties as the opening act for the Eagles, playing at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, JD & the Straight Shot played an after-show at Sundown at the Granada. They’ve been supporting the Eagles on the current leg of the History of the Eagles Tour and will be appearing with them over the coming weeks in Memphis, Nashville, Kansas City and St. Louis. Front man, James Dolan, isn’t just a guitar player and songwriter; he’s also CEO of Cablevision, Executive Chairman of Madison Square Garden, Inc., and the owner of the NY Knicks and the NY Rangers. Obviously this leads to a pretty full agenda, but JD makes time for his passion, making music. The blues-rock band started out the late set with Float Away, from their most recent album, Midnight Run. They progressed through tunes from all four of JD’s albums, as well as cover tunes from Little Feat (Let It Roll, Dixie Chicken), the New Riders of the Purple Sage (Panama Red), It’s a Beautiful Day (White Bird) and closing the set with Bruce Springsteen’s classic, Pink Cadillac. JD & the Straight Shot is comprised of a who’s who of musicians. Alongside James Dolan on stage is Brian Mitchell (Levon Helm, Bob Dylan) on keyboards, harmonica and accordion, Marc Copely (BB King) on lead guitar and banjo, Zev Katz (Hall & Oates, Elton John, Aretha Franklin) on bass, Lorenza Ponce (Sheryl Crow, Bon Jovi, Ben Folds) on violin, Shawn Pelton (Rod Stewart, Pink, Daryl Hall, Buddy Guy) on drums and Aiden Dolan, James Dolan’s son, on guitar.
