Last Thursday brought a little bit of New Orleans to the Kessler Theater in Dallas, TX.  Three bands, all from The Big Easy, got the crowd moving at the historic art- deco venue in the Oak Cliff neighborhood of Dallas.  Opening up the evening were The Revivalists, who wrapped up their short set with their hit, Criminal.  Next up were the Soul Rebels, who played a longer set, heavy on brass and percussion.  They opened up with the Eurythmics song Sweet Dreams, and ended with Bob Marley’s Could You Be Loved.

The headlining act was Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk, which did not disappoint.  They opened their set with Gasman, Everybody Wants Some and Water.  Next up was She’s Music, Dancin’ to the Truth,and Paper Chasing Britney.  They played David Bowie’s Fame, and segued into their trademark Put it in the Dumpsta.  They wrapped up their set with Standing in Your Stuff, Lt. Dan and Meanwhile.  The encore was Color Blind.  The band has an interesting setup, with two bass players.  Also, they’ve recently brought in a new drummer, Nikki Glaspie, previously a member of Beyonce’s all-female touring band.

All three bands were at their final stop before heading to SXSW in Austin.  With the summer festival season just around the corner, I’m sure you’ll be seeing all three of these acts a lot over the next few months.  Also, look for Dumpstaphunk’s forthcoming new album, Dirty Word, due out in May of this year.
