Some music seems to surpass all the rest and breakthrough barriers on genres, listening to the music come together by the band Railroad Earth emphasizes the captivating uniqueness that string instruments can create. This band sheds a light onto the stage and on the night before Halloween at the Vic theater they swayed Chicago's attendees as the chaos and beauty in their playing brewed. This Jersey band knows how to entice audiences to the original songs they belt out into the evening. With powerful lyrics and a bewitching performance the audience couldn't help but dance the night away.

Starting the evening off was the band Great American Taxi, an upbeat bluegrass band that pumped up the audience with subtle tunes and sweet melodies. Railroad Earth came out to a roar in the crowd as they began playing the starting notes to the moving song "Seven Story Mountain". The band jams through the first set as the crowd sways to the beats of singles such as "Bread and Water", "Saddle of the Sun". " Bird in a House" and the lyrically moving number " Peace on Earth". Each song that the band puts out seems to lift the crowd up and the jam sessions taking your breathe away.

As the set continued, the music stemmed from the stage and seemed to go along with the beating hearts of those glancing up at the musicians. The beginning set seemed to be more jamming than lyrical for Railroad. The band introduced a new song this show, a noteworthy tune which follows the same style Railroad puts forth through all their music, catchy, upbeat and instrumentally appealing. The set closed with the song " Cold Water" leaving the crowd hanging on the last notes played awaiting the continuance of the melodies that sweetly rocked the venue.

During the set break the attendees recuperated after a bombing start to the evening while preparing to continue the swaying to the music to come. Taking a glance at the audience you cant deny the dynamic variety of those this band attracts, there are young teenagers to the older folk enjoying the night life and opening up themselves to the bluegrass within. This attraction is especially noticeable due to my father attending the show with me, this just proves this band can impress at all ages and move all different types of people who are interested in varieties of other music all coming together in front of these talented fellas as they stepped back out to continue the show.

Beginning the set with "Walk beside me" into "Colorado", the narrative song of the beautiful state in the west, you could almost feel the mountain air being brushed through the venue with the power of the lyrics and playing of the song. "Old Man and the Land" was played next; impromptu gathering of beats was very impressive and something that Railroad's sound has been since the start of the band. Noticeably this gig seemed to be a less lyrical show than those Ive experienced with RRE before and this was reinstated with the front man Todd Sheaffer came out asking for the audience's help belting out the tune "Head" due to his voice diminishing throughout the show, hopefully he got better soon after this show because his voice is a very moving part of this bands draw.

Closing the first set with the song "Fisherman's Blues" left the crowd wanting and waiting to come back on for a few more songs. The band encored with the self titled song "Railroad Earth" , a slow moving ballad which sways you a little listening to it; the sweet lyrics that give you chills with the captivation of the tune truly sheds light on this band and how they put themselves forth. A truly beautiful show that concluded with the amazing cover of Jerry Garcia's song "My Sisters and Brothers", a song which brought the audience together for one last movement starting off a crazy and magical weekend to end October with great beats and a very happy memory of moving music that seems to echo in the hearts of the audience members.

Railroad Earth is a band which you should not miss next time they come around, a vividly appealing show instrumentally and lyrically. Good vibes and great memories always come from these fellas sharing the love while doing what they love on stage, you will forever be moved by the simple and sweet melodies that rock your soul.
