The legendary New York based jam band, The Zen Tricksters, celebrates its 30th anniversary on Sunday, October 25th with a rare show at B.B. King Blues Club in New York (237 W. 42 St. 212 997-4144), NY beginning at 7:30 PM. Founder and lead guitarist Jeff Mattson will be joined by veteran Zen Tricksters Klyph Black (bass), Tom Circosta (guitar), and Dave Diamond (drums). The band is currently on hiatus while Mattson pursues his project with Donna Jean Godchaux (Grateful Dead), The Donna Jean Godchaux Band, and Klyph Black tours with his blues band, Rumor Has It. Mattson recalls their early days when the band was called The Volunteers and played five+ nights a week in Long Island clubs.
The band began touring nationally in 1989 and has played in nearly every state in the Union, as well as Canada and Japan. Former Zen Tricksters players of note include Rob Barraco who played with band mate Mattson with Phil Lesh in 1999, went on to play with The Dead, and who now plays keys with Dark Star Orchestra.
