A flurry of psychedelic dancers, a light system rigged to stimulate your senses and a packed house at The Kinetic Playground in Chicago is what happens when you get "Shpongled" by Simon Posford of Shpongle. Known for being at the forefront of Psybient Electronica (or psychedelic down-tempo electronica) he did not let the people of Chicago have any less than what he is known for.
Opening the night with "Vapour Rumors", right away the feeling inside the venue was explosive, set off by the light design by Keagan Design covering the whole venue and VJ skills that surpass the rest which is VJ Zebbler, mixing live video feed with psychedelic masks that is the Shpongle and was simply amazing watching him work his VJ Skills to Simon, they seemed to feed off each other as I caught Simon Posford looking at the screens with a little smile on his face. At the third song of the night, which was "D.M.T" (or "Devine Moments of Truth") a multi-color, glowing tribal like dancer stepped onto the stage performing a perfectly connected dance with this ultra psychedelic song and it seemed truly fitting to the nature of the whole event! With a D.J. It was great to see the stage fill up with the psychedelic ArcheDream Dancers, as most Dj's fill up their stage with alot of lights, Simon instead brings eclectic dancing for the crowd, which is great because most DJ shows are not to aesthetically pleasing, just having a DJ behind a flurry of electronic nob's, equalizers and computers. The dancers continued to dance into the song, "When Shall I be free", it almost seemed like everyone there had stopped once the dancers had come onto the stage, amazed by black light outfits and tribal like dancing, but once everyone got acquainted with these dancers everyone focused back to the music and resumed dancing, in a trance like state! Also thru the night he busted out "My Head Feels Like a Frisbee", "Beija Flor" and "Levitation Nation". Aside from just the Dancers coming out on stage to wow the crowd, Simon Posford joined the crowd on the front of the stage greeting and dancing with all of his fans and giving thanks, to the nearly sold out crowd that filled the Kinetic Playground.
Shpongle is truely a great DJ and revolutionary musician, mixing many influences from Latin America to India and everything and anything tribal and psychedelic. He is pushing the boundaries (happily accepted by the crowd) of what a DJ act should be, a multi-sensory show, not only pleasing the mind but also pleasing to the eyes of the crowd.
